Insert users using API or some other form

Hi all,
I'm using mediawiki with a new website and need to ONLY allow registration of media wiki users specifically through my original website. The API does not have this built in functionality, but I'm assuming someone out there has modified the API to allow registration or has found some alternate route.
Any help with this issue would be appreciated.
