Placing static content on either side of main content

What is the easiest way to be able to add static content to either the left or right of the paulgu main section (700-whatever pixels wide with the slight shadows on either side). Is this possible in a straightforward way?

For static content, the easiest way is change GuMax.php, include some code there.
