Navigation Bar Modification - from text to image

I am trying to create a custom navigation menu, using an image with text on it, possbly even looking to somehow make the text able to be rolled over.
I replaced the stripe-gray.gif with my own custom navigation bar which is called ribbon.jpg, ribbon.jpg is a brown ribbon with white Mr.Eaves Small Caps text on it.
I would like to have it so that when you rollover the White Text in the image the drop down activates. My way of developing this was to move the Sidebar text under #gumax-nav a in gumax_Droppy.css
I put the text overtop the images, and tried to hide the text. You apparently cannot hide the text using display hidden: visibility: invisble, without totally disabling the drop down.
Additionally when you leave it alone the text on the top menu is rolled over with the background color of the drop down.
What is the best way to do what I am trying to do?
