email user when watched page edits

In theory it ought to be possible for mediawiki to email a user who has put an email address in their preferences, when a watched page is edited, and this setting is enabled in the preferences.
Although email otherwise works fine at my site and ISP, I cannot get this to work. Any thoughts greatly appreciated,
