I want to put the search box somewhere in the middle of mainpage (i.e., context area). How can I do that?

If you want it in the article, you need an extension to do that.

You should be able to find some instructions on http://www.MediaWiki.org. I'm not sure if there is a similar extension, but you can do a search in Google and MediaWiki site.
