You know, chit chat as in talking. Well, I know what chat is... what's a chit?

The dictionary meaning of chit chat is casual conversation or small talk. It can also be classified as gossip or to engage in small talk or gossip.

If we are going to magnify and divide things, it would make sense to give chat the term talk and chit the term small. So when combined, they will be small talk.

I am not sure about this definition but it kind of makes sense to me.
